I Care A Lot makes you route for crappy people. That’s a hard act to pull off, but with Rosamund Pike at the helm with a cracking bob and icy smiley that’d permanently freeze your soul, you’re off to a good start.
Pike’s character is a piece of work. She manipulates vulnerable old people for money and doesn’t give a crap. Yet, when her life is put in danger by Peter Dinklage’s somewhat generic Eastern Europe gangster-type (lots of money and lots of four-by-fours), you kind of don’t want her to die.
It’s nicely paced, darkly funny, with a little bit of emotion chucked into the pot in a few fleeting moments of tenderness between Pike’s character and her girlfriend to show she does have a heart, somewhere. The Gone Girl star really is the stand-out though in a film that is full of crapness, but makes for enjoyable viewing.
